Every day, billions of people use corporate social media platforms to communicate, spread ideas, stay informed, and entertain themselves. But these platforms are not neutral. Instagram, Facebook, and X, among others, are networks owned by billionaires like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, who use their algorithms to maximize their profits and maintain the social order that keeps them at the top and the overwhelming majority of the population exploited for their benefit. They shape our perception of reality by filtering all the content we see, controlling the reach of our posts, and banning those who become a nuisance. And we still reward them for it, creating free content for their networks and giving them a daily flood of personal data that they will use to gain even more profit and power.
Their networks seem omnipresent and unavoidable. After all, what is the alternative? Indeed, isolated, as they want us to be, we have no choice but to submit to their networks of domination. But together we can organize to build and inhabit new networks that are under our control and serve our own interests.
