In the Archipelago occupied by the Philippine state, a new anti-terrorism law was adopted in 2020 that restricts freedom of expression, increases surveillance of the population, allows for arrest without a warrant, and threatens those who oppose the state with life imprisonment without the right to parole.
The definition of “terrorism” is deliberately abstract, so as to encompass any enemy of the state and divide people into “good” and “bad.” When threatened by popular uprisings, the state uses the label of “terrorist” to isolate and criminalize people and movements seeking more radical changes—beyond what the state considers acceptable. Anarchists, anti-fascists, workers’ organizations, and the struggle against police violence or colonial powers have all been targets of this tactic.
Showing solidarity with those criminalized for fighting is part of any struggle for a more just and equal world.
Duterte out! Down with the states—the real terrorists!
