June 2021 was marked by uprisings known as the Indigenous Uprising or the Uprising for the Land, characterized by barricades and violent clashes involving dozens of Indigenous peoples expressing their outrage over the rollback of Indigenous land demarcations. Bill PL-490 legitimizes mining and exploitation of these lands, restricts demarcation, encourages evangelization, and threatens peoples who have chosen to live in isolation from white settlers. The activities that the bill legitimizes have always taken place, with greater or lesser encouragement from the state, even if more discreetly than under the current administration. Just like the Indigenous Uprising, which is not a recent phenomenon nor is it isolated to Brasília. Colonization has never been peaceful; since the invasion, there has been resistance, and whether this bill is approved or not, resistance will continue.
